SYMBYX Biome Closing After Six Years
SYMBYX Biome has announced that it is closing and winding down its operations after six years of developing and researching light-based therapies.
The Australian company, co-founded and led by CEO Dr. Wayne Markman, contributed to research and discussion around photobiomodulation in the Parkinson’s community. SYMBYX supported studies examining whether red and infrared light could help manage motor and non-motor symptoms, including research related to the gut-brain axis, the microbiome, and cellular energy.
The science in this area is still developing, and light therapy has not been established as a replacement for proven Parkinson’s treatments.

For a brief period, I trialed one of the company’s devices. That gave me some direct experience with the technology and the practicalities of using it, although personal experience alone cannot determine whether a therapy is effective.
It is difficult to launch a new product at any time, let alone from Australia during a global pandemic. Wayne travelled around the world looking for research partners, financial support and opportunities to put the technology through clinical trials.
Along the way, Wayne became a friend. I admire his heart, his mind and the grit he showed in continuing to pursue the work despite the many obstacles he faced.
For Wayne, SYMBYX Biome was personal. His commitment went beyond building a company or selling a device. He genuinely cares about people with Parkinson’s, and I am confident he will continue supporting the community in whatever comes next.

The closure will be disappointing for people who use SYMBYX devices and for those following this area of Parkinson’s research. The company has shared the following details regarding the wind-down of its operations:
The company says existing 12-month product warranties will remain valid and will continue to be honoured.
For warranty claims, questions about existing devices, troubleshooting or other customer-support matters, the team will remain reachable at info@symbyxbiome.com.
You can also hear Wayne discuss his work and personal motivation on the When Life Gives You Parkinson’s podcast:
Thank you to Wayne and the SYMBYX team for their work in Parkinson’s research and their involvement with the Parkinson’s community over the past six years.
